At Barossa Home & Community Options, Supported Independent Living (SIL) focuses on more than just providing support. It helps people gain the confidence and practical skills needed to live independently. Each day brings new opportunities for participants to learn and grow, building routines and responsibilities that prepare them for a more self-sufficient future.
Today, Simon worked with our support team to learn how to clean a bathroom safely and thoroughly. With guidance and encouragement, he took pride in completing every step, from cleaning the glass and benches to the walls, toilet, and floors. The result was a sparkling bathroom and another important step in Simon’s journey toward greater independence.
Why Building Everyday Skills Matters
Everyday household tasks are about much more than keeping a home clean and organised—they're an important part of developing the skills needed to live more independently. Learning practical tasks such as cleaning helps participants gain confidence, establish routines and take pride in caring for their own environment.
These everyday experiences help participants to:
Develop daily routines that create structure and consistency.
Build confidence by learning and mastering practical life skills.
Take greater responsibility for their home and personal environment.
Prepare for increased independence and future living goals.
Every new skill learned is a meaningful milestone. Celebrating these achievements encourages continued growth, builds self-belief and empowers participants to take on new challenges.
